Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) chose not to comment on whether former President Biden should step back from the 2024 election, suggesting that larger Democratic figures “do nothing” regarding such decisions.
In an interview on Fox News’ “Special Report,” when prompted by Brett Baier about whether Biden should have exited the race earlier, Sanders replied, “Brett, I haven’t returned in a year.”
He expressed that he didn’t wish to tie the issue to Biden.
Baier countered, “But isn’t that a big part of where the Democrats are?”
“No, no, not,” Sanders responded. He distanced himself from Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Sanders noted that the real challenge for Democrats appears to be disconnect with working-class Americans.
“What is the fundamental problem in politics? Which side are you on?” he elaborated. “You have huge income and wealth disparity. The wealthiest individuals and corporations dominate our economy.”
He asked rhetorically, “Are you standing with the working class and their families, or with those who have a lot of money?”
This line of questioning followed a clip of Biden’s recent BBC interview, where he claimed he hadn’t run away from past campaigns during the ongoing 2024 race.
“I don’t think that’s important,” Biden remarked in the interview.
He noted, “We left when we had a good candidate. She was fully funded,” referring to Harris, who was elevated to lead the ticket when he stepped aside to bolster the Biden-Harris campaign backing.
Since the 2024 election, Sanders has been vocal in critiquing both political parties. His “Oligarchy of the Battle” tour, which has drawn support from figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), focuses on exposing issues of wealth inequality and corruption stemming from the Trump administration.
