This isn’t what I anticipated.

When her son approached her with a request for a sleepover, this mom envisioned a night filled with sleeping bags, popcorn, and the delightful chaos of kids having fun. However, reality took a different turn when she ended up with six kids who seemed more like a tech support team.

“Half the kids had their devices. They were constantly switching between iPads and Nintendos,” she remarked.

This was quite the eye-opener regarding what a 2025 sleepover really looks like.

“I never expected this.”

“They aren’t really playing together. Everyone is doing their own thing, yet they’re all trying to engage with each other at the same time,” she shared.

“One child was so engrossed in his Switch that I had to check on him multiple times to make sure he was alright,” she added.

Feeling perplexed, she took to Reddit to express her frustrations and see if this was becoming the norm.

This was her first experience hosting such an event, but it definitely wasn’t what she had envisioned.

“What is going on? I never thought I’d see this,” she said.

“Change is needed”

Seeking advice, she turned to a parenting forum full of supportive comments.

“Next time, set a no-device rule beforehand. Other parents usually appreciate the heads-up when you say, ‘We have a no-screen policy for sleepovers.’ In our last one, we built forts and played games, and the kids managed to have fun without screens,” one commenter suggested.

“Outdoor movie nights, iPads, and Switches are off-limits, or they end up monopolizing the evening,” another chimed in.

One person noted that many parents might not have anticipated this change. “I would have been taken aback as well,” they said.

One thing is clear: this mom is determined not to repeat the experience.

“It feels awkward to ask, ‘Can you leave your devices at home?’ This was our first party, and it might just be our last,” she explained.

As other parents get ready for future sleepovers, she gave a straightforward piece of advice:

“Hey, parents, don’t put others through this. It’s a real downer,” she warned.
