The Christian rapper has emerged as a fan favorite in NPR’s Tiny Desk competition, standing out among over 7,000 entrants in the quest for America’s top undiscovered talent. Rapper Nobigdyl, known for his impactful track “The Intertwining of Images,” won a fan favorite award. This song delves into themes of faith and commentary, capturing the essence of recognizing Jesus even among one’s adversaries. It’s featured on his upcoming album, “The People We Became,” as reported.
Interestingly, he also secured a fan favorite award last year. NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest serves as a platform for unsigned artists to showcase their music within the renowned Tiny Desk concert series. However, NPR has yet to announce the overall contest winner.
Originally named Dylan Phillips, he shared, “I chose this song because I believe in the transformative power of music.” NPR panelists Bobby Carter and Larsel were impressed by the song’s depth.
Carter noted, “I didn’t realize he was a Christian rapper. There’s often this stigma around conscious or Christian rap that it doesn’t have the same impact, but here we are.” He emphasized that Nobigdyl’s music can easily fit into any hip-hop playlist, showing that the genre’s themes are broader than expected.
Moreover, Larsel praised the high production quality of Nobigdyl’s music video, mentioning the impressive band performances in the background. “Great art transcends expectations,” Larsel remarked, acknowledging both talent and the hard work put into the project. “When you invest in opportunities, it shows you believe they are worth it. You can see that he takes this seriously, and he’s bound to see rewards from it.”
While Christian rap might be a new genre for mainstream audiences, it certainly has a following and has made waves particularly among Christian listeners. Notably, in 2022, he won a Dove Award for his collaboration with KB, titled “Jesus.”
