12-Foot Sculpture of Curvy Black Woman Adorns Times Square

After the installation of a statue purported to represent a “plus-size black woman” in Times Square, social media reaction has been mixed.

A new 12-foot bronze sculpture titled “It is grounded by a star” has been unveiled in Duffy Square. Created by artist Thomas J. Price, its meaning invites various interpretations. According to the description on the Times Square website, Price “rethinks both the monument and monument of Times Square.”

The description notes that the sculpture and a related multi-channel presentation form a dual project in Times Square, highlighting the importance of individual value and bringing attention to traditionally overlooked bodies on a significant scale. Interestingly, it mentions that the woman depicted in the statue has “familiar qualities” and recognizes a shared humanity as onlookers engage with the piece. Price draws inspiration from Michelangelo, suggesting that the figure’s natural pose is reminiscent of David.

The explanation suggests that while the sculpture embodies grand themes, it also challenges conventional notions about which figures and achievements deserve to be immortalized.

Price shared his intention, saying that “It is grounded by a star and Man Series aim to inspire meaningful connections and offer emotional depth that reflects a broader cultural diversity.”

Despite these noble intentions, responses to the sculpture have been less than kind.

Comments ranged from confusion to outright criticism, with one person expressing frustration by asking, “What happened to art?” Another declared that phrases like “‘Groundbreaking’ & ‘Traditional of Challenges’ are just buzzwords following empty trends.”
