Luke Humphries, much to the delight of the local crowd, clinched victory at the Premier League nights, taking down Luke Rittler in the final. Interestingly, Rittler, a Manchester United supporter, had earlier mocked Leeds fans during his opening match.
The city is buzzing, celebrating the football club’s promotion from this week’s championship, while Buyant Supporters are looking forward to their favorite matches featured in the playoffs later this month.
The celebration at the first direct arena was particularly sweet, following a dramatic 6-5 win over Littler, leaving some teenagers in the crowd booing.
Although Humphries is from Berkshire, his loyalty lies with Leeds, and he has now scored consecutive wins in Yorkshire, further establishing himself alongside Littler, who will be competing soon in London. This arena has proven to be a venue of decisive action as they gear up for three weeks of intense matches.
Rittler, who had previously run through hostile fans and pretended to cry after defeating Nathan Aspinall, encountered a tough challenge from Humphries in the electrifying final. Ultimately, Rittler faltered on a crucial Bullseye shot which allowed Humphries, who achieved an impressive five 180s with an average score of 100.96, to take the win after a long drought of ten weeks without a victory.
“I truly wanted to win and am incredibly happy to do it here in Leeds. It feels really special,” he shared. “This place gives me a sense of home, even if it isn’t technically where I’m from.” He went on to express how last year’s win boosted his confidence significantly on the nights of finals, and he hopes for a similar outcome this time.
Humphries recognized the challenge of competing against Rittler, acknowledging that one can’t afford to have off nights when facing such formidable opponents.
He kicked off his night with a 6-4 win against Michael Van Gerwen, who has yet to secure his first win this year. The pressure is palpable with seven-time playoff champions still in the mix, while Aspinall and Rob Cross are keeping things tense.
Stephen Bunting is also making a push, having advanced to the semi-finals, where he was ultimately bested by Humphries. Bunting had previously knocked out Chris Dobey in the quarterfinals, while Price’s victory over Cross ensured his spot in the playoffs.
