Charles Barkley Discusses Trans Athlete Controversy

Charles Barkley recently shared his thoughts on the contentious issue surrounding trans athletes, expressing his concerns to what he called “silly” supporters of the movement. He firmly stated that he believes men should not compete against women in sports.

“I’m going to make this very clear, Dan. Men should not play sports against women,” Barkley told Dan Dakich during a conversation. He asserted that there’s too much chaos surrounding the issue and expressed his steadfast position on the matter.

The Hall of Famer emphasized that he supports the LGBTQ+ community but maintains that men competing against women is not appropriate under any circumstances. Barkley noted, “I think it’s foolish to believe otherwise.” He feels strongly about not being swayed by public opinion.

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that prohibits biological men from participating in women’s sports, pressuring schools to comply or risk losing federal funding. Following this, the NCAA announced a new policy barring all biological men from female sports.

Barkley reiterated that his views would not change despite any external pressure, insisting, “If someone disagrees, they’ll have to get over it. I believe it’s wrong, full stop.” He added that he doesn’t see the controversy in his stance and has no interest in debating it further.

This discussion arose after Dakich inquired about rumors that Nike had funded research into the participation of trans children in sports. Reports suggested that Nike had financially supported studies examining the effects of hormone therapies on trans adolescents, which mentioned a trans athlete, Brai Fleming.

Though Barkley claimed he wasn’t familiar with the specific report, he urged caution regarding minors being given irreversible treatments. He remarked, “I don’t think kids know who they are at such a young age. We should be very careful not to put them at a disadvantage.” He reflected on how many young people may not fully understand their identities.

Ultimately, Barkley expressed skepticism about trends involving trans youth, suggesting that parents might not be fully aware of their children’s perspectives.
