Vice President Vance expressed concerns on Thursday regarding the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan, labeling a full-scale war as “disastrous.” However, he emphasized that the U.S. should refrain from direct involvement in the situation.
“We’re definitely worried when nuclear powers engage in conflict,” Vance noted during an interview with Martha McCallum of Fox News. “Our role should be to encourage both sides to cool things down, but it’s important to remember that we shouldn’t intervene in a conflict that doesn’t directly relate to U.S. interests.”
India and Pakistan are nearing military engagement following a deadly attack by Pakistani terrorists on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. In response, India conducted a missile strike this week, targeting what they claim are terrorist training sites in Pakistan.
Vance, who was in India during the attack, indicated that resolution should come from both nations to avoid escalation into war.
“We hope and expect that this will not escalate into a broader regional conflict. We definitely have concerns, not only regarding diplomatic efforts but also the need for calm dialogue between India and Pakistan to prevent any nuclear confrontation,” he stressed.
Former President Trump previously advocated for an offensive against the Kashmir resort, describing the attack as a significant violation.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump conveyed, “We fully support Prime Minister Modi and the people of India. Our hearts go out to you!” following the missile strike on April 22.
This week, Trump commented on India’s retaliatory measures, saying he wasn’t surprised. “I think people had a sense that something might happen, given past events,” he mentioned to reporters at the White House. “They have had long-standing conflicts, going back many years.”
“I truly hope this situation resolves quickly,” Trump added.
