Comedian Lewis Black, known for his sharp humor, made an appearance in a Disney animated film titled Turn it over. He also guest hosted The Daily Show on Thursday, where he took aim at the Catholic Church with a joke referencing sexual abuse among children during a conclave to select a new Pope.
Black made a series of at least three jokes about the church’s past, starting with an explanation of the Vatican’s smoke signals following a video clip from James Longman on ABC. Longman clarified that black smoke indicated a decision hadn’t been made, while white smoke signaled the election of a new Pope.
Following Longman’s explanation, Black quipped, “And the red smoke means that a boy from another altar has fallen into the incinerator. Oopsie! You should keep your mouth closed!”

Shortly after, Black drew a humorous comparison between the conclave and masturbation, remarking, “Now I want to tell you more about Conclaves, but it’s a lot like masturbating. You don’t talk about it.”
In another moment, he criticized how the Cardinals occasionally deflect blame onto the conclave regarding issues of sexual abuse.
Meanwhile, CBS reporter Tony Dokoupil noted that the Cardinals were “raw dogging” the conclave, implying they were going through the discussions without any technology or entertainment.
However, Black had a different perspective on the Cardinals’ activities during this period. He remarked, “I’m sure when a Cardinal is involved, kids call it something other than ‘raw dogging.’ And how do these guys keep up with the Didi Trial without cell phones? They must be big fans of his work.”
