On Friday, President Trump had a meeting with Mayor Eric Adams, where they discussed an upcoming release of documents related to the ongoing corruption investigation involving the mayor of New York City.
During a press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt mentioned that Adams had reached out to Trump to arrange this meeting, although she didn’t elaborate on what specific topics they would cover.
“If Trump wants to, we can talk more personally after that,” Leavitt stated, hinting at potential further discussions.
Earlier on Friday, Adams shared a video on social media announcing his trip to Washington to meet Trump, mentioning the importance of discussing how to support New Yorkers. This marks what seems to be their first meeting since Adams visited Trump in Florida before taking office.
The timing of their conversation aligns with the Justice Department’s deadline for releasing various documents, including search warrants and affidavits, associated with Adams’ legal issues earlier this year.
These documents are anticipated to clarify aspects of the investigation into Adams, particularly evidence relevant to the serious charges against him. A US District Judge had previously dismissed parts of the case, noting it hindered Adams’ ability to pursue Trump’s immigration policies.
The situation has created some turmoil within the US Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York, as several federal prosecutors, including those managing Adams’ case, resigned instead of complying with certain requests.
This document release was originally set for last week but has since been postponed to Friday evening.
Adams faces allegations of accepting bribes from a wealthy foreign businessman and at least one official from Turkey during his time as mayor. He has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
