Former White Sox pitcher reacts humorously to the Pope’s support

Former Chicago White Sox pitcher Eric Fedde had a light-hearted reaction upon discovering that new Pope Robert Prevast is a fan of his former team. At a press event, the 32-year-old, now with the St. Louis Cardinals, was asked about Pope Leo XIV’s support for the White Sox. He quipped, “Well, maybe he had to look at us and pray a few times.”

Fedde notably played for a White Sox team last season that suffered significant losses, ending with a dismal record of 41-121, which marked the lowest point in modern MLB history. Interestingly, a clip surfaced online showing a key moment during the 2005 World Series, where the White Sox triumphed over the Houston Astros, though they haven’t managed to win a playoff series since.

Prevast’s allegiance to baseball was a topic of discussion, especially since it was rumored that the first American pope supported the Chicago Cubs. However, according to reports, his brother confirmed his true fandom lies with the White Sox. Among the struggling White Sox team last season, Fedde stood out with a record of 7-4 and a respectable ERA of 3.11 before being traded to the Cardinals.

This season, he carries a 3.86 ERA with a 3-3 record, and recently achieved a complete game shutout against the Washington Nationals. It’s been a rollercoaster for Fedde, moving from a team with major struggles to finding success with the Cardinals.
