Zelenskyy responds positively to Putin’s suggestion for talks, but insists on a complete, lasting, and reliable ceasefire.

Zelenskyy Sees Hope in Russia’s Consideration of Ending the War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently expressed optimism regarding Russia’s proposal for an in-person meeting in Istanbul. While he appreciates the gesture, he emphasized his team is looking for Russia to agree to a “permanent” ceasefire starting tomorrow.

In a post on social media, Zelenskyy conveyed, without directly addressing Putin’s invitation:

It’s encouraging that Russia seems to be taking steps toward ending the war.

The world has awaited this possibility for quite some time. A ceasefire is essential to truly conclude any conflict; killing, even for one more day, serves no purpose.

We anticipate Russia will confirm a sustainable and reliable ceasefire by tomorrow, May 12th, and Ukraine stands ready to engage.

Russia’s Drone Attacks Despite Peace Talks

In a surprising move, Russia executed a drone assault early Sunday, which injured one person and damaged several homes in the Kyiv region, despite ongoing discussions about possible peace talks. Russian forces launched 108 drones from various directions, as reported by Ukraine’s air force.

As of 9:30 AM, Ukrainian air defense had successfully downed 60 drones across different regions. However, 41 drones went off radar without causing damage.

No immediate casualties have been reported; still, the Ukrainian air force noted that the Sumy region, bordering Russia’s Kursk region, suffered as a result of the attack.

Macron Responds to Putin’s Proposal

French President Emmanuel Macron has reacted to Putin’s proposal in a morning post on social media.

Alongside Kyiv and President Trump, we put forth a clear proposal: an unconditional 30-day ceasefire starting Monday. President Zelenskyy has committed without preconditions, and we now await a clear response from Russia.

No negotiations can occur while weapons are in play. Dialogue remains impossible during the bombing of civilians. We need a ceasefire so discussions can begin—for peace.

Macron, a consistent supporter of Kyiv, has previously asserted that any peace deal must not equate to a surrender for Ukraine and should come with security guarantees.

Context of the Ongoing Conflict

Recently, during a televised address, Vladimir Putin reiterated his readiness for direct talks with Ukraine, conditional upon specific terms being met. This proposal comes on the heels of European leaders threatening Russia with new sanctions if it fails to agree on an unconditional ceasefire by tomorrow.

Pundits suggest that despite his willingness to talk, Putin is unlikely to pursue true peace negotiations, seeing his recent overtures as a way to appear cooperative while maintaining aggressive actions.
