Trump proposes a complete overhaul of US-China trade relations during tariff discussions in Geneva.

Trump suggests ‘total reset’ in US-China trade relations amid tariff talks in Geneva

On Saturday, President Trump suggested a “complete reset” for US-China trade relations during discussions regarding tariffs in Switzerland.

He mentioned, “We had a very good meeting with China in Switzerland today. There was a lot of conversation, and many agreements were reached. This reset was handled in a friendly yet productive manner. We hope for greater openness from China to American businesses for the benefit of both nations,” in a post on his platform.

The Associated Press reported that new tariffs between the two countries were enforced earlier that day, but opinions on the progress of negotiations appeared to vary. China stated it “will compromise on core principles while firmly opposing any proposals that threaten global equity,” as noted by the Associated Press.

Trump’s tariff strategies during the early months of his second term had previously unsettled global markets, causing frictions not just with China, but also with the European Union and Canada, along with escalating economic instability worldwide.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently indicated that the administration aims to ease tensions surrounding tariff policies but emphasized a need to address trade imbalances with China effectively.

Lutnick stated, “The president wants to resolve issues with China. He’s looking to redirect efforts. But he’s not going to accept a trillion-dollar deficit. That’s just not feasible. The goal is to improve trade with China and negotiate favorable agreements globally. We need to lower the trade deficit and enhance GDP,” he added.
