What started as a playful dig between two comedians has transformed into an annual 5K event that draws thousands. Comedians Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura have turned a casual joke into a fun gathering where the emphasis is more on enjoyment than competition.
“We somehow decided to have a 5K every year, and it’s turned into quite the spectacle with around 6,000 participants,” Segura stated, referring to the event held at Raymond James Stadium.
The concept of “2 Bears 5K” traces back to their appearances on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, where they playfully challenged each other to lose weight. This friendly rivalry has now evolved into a lifestyle change for both comedians and their fans.
“Engage in something positive and then try to act like it didn’t happen,” joked Segura about the event’s vibe.
Initially sparked by some lighthearted banter, the event has grown to attract enthusiasts nationwide. Kreischer acknowledged that their humorous exchanges on Rogan’s podcast laid the groundwork for something much bigger.
While some participants aim to run, others can partake in various activities post-race, such as games. Segura humorously remarked on the event as a way of bringing people together, mixing health with some light-hearted celebration.
Country star Jelly Roll, who has embarked on his weight loss journey, pledged to support the event. He successfully completed the 5K last year, which marked a significant milestone in his transformation; he has reportedly lost around 183 pounds.
“He’s a genuine person, and his progress has inspired a lot of people,” Segura noted, reflecting on Jelly Roll’s journey and its positive impact on others.
Kreischer shared that Jelly Roll’s weight loss story continues to motivate many participants, highlighting how the event encourages lifestyle changes in attendees.
The gathering also featured retired NFL star Jason Kelce and players from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, emphasizing that it’s not just a race but a community effort. With both comedians busy with their respective projects, Segura’s latest special is set to drop on Netflix soon, while Kreischer is promoting his new film inspired by his stand-up routine.
In summary, the “2 Bears 5K” is not just about running; it’s about fun, transformation, and community—where laughter and health go hand in hand.
