Newark airport faces another alarming air traffic control failure, grounding flights completely.

The Newark area faced significant disruption, resulting in nearly 80 flight cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport, alongside delays for over 40 flights.

After the air traffic control facility in Newark was shut down, the FAA implemented a 45-minute ground stop on Sunday morning.

This incident followed a radar malfunction that occurred on Friday, which had already halted operations that morning.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy indicated that flights in and out of the airport may decrease over the coming weeks due to a shortage of air traffic controllers.

“If you’re booking a flight, you definitely want a variety of options,” he commented during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Discussions with airlines operating from Newark Liberty will take place this week to plan for possible reductions in flights.

Notably, United Airlines accounts for about 75% of the air traffic at this New Jersey hub.
