New Mexico Sheriff’s Office Addresses Decision on Boys with Handgun

The New Mexico Sheriff’s Office is explaining its choice not to arrest two young boys, aged 7 and 9.

A video released recently by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) captures the boys, dressed in Star Wars-themed pajamas, hiding behind a covered air conditioning unit while handling a loaded firearm.

In the almost six-minute footage, they appear to be looking around cautiously, seemingly trying to avoid being found. Eventually, deputies surround them and take them into custody.

Sheriff John Allen remarked in a statement that “this incident reflects a complicated blend of juvenile crime, mental health, and public safety.” He added that the department is working towards improving its services to better engage with young individuals involved in firearms and violent situations.

This event took place on February 16 but was highlighted recently when BCSO introduced new initiatives aimed at addressing gaps in community services.

According to reports from the Albuquerque Journal, the sheriff’s department had responded to the boys’ home on numerous occasions before the standoff, concerning issues related to the boys and their family. The source of the firearms they had remains unclear.

The video showed that while the guns were seized, the boys weren’t charged and remained at home.

“I get that people might think strong measures are necessary, but they’re just kids,” Allen stated, emphasizing their young ages. “We need to find a way to help rather than punish.”

A BCSO Sergeant mentioned that the department’s behavioral health unit is currently in contact with the boys’ family, highlighting the importance of safety and intervention.

BCSO also noted that using drones can help agents quickly and safely assess the area, potentially preventing dangerous outcomes.
