WEST SACRAMENTO, CA – Ryan Yabra disclosed that Marcus Stroman wasn’t progressing as hoped, on a day that saw the Yankees’ rotation depth take a hit.
Stroman participated in a live session in Tampa on Friday, but he still experienced discomfort in his knees, as Aaron Boone mentioned on Sunday.
The manager wasn’t quite sure about Stroman’s next move or if the issue had been addressed. There’s growing concern regarding his ongoing knee problems.
“He has numerous options for treatment, yet he can’t quite clear that final hurdle to get back on the mound,” Boone remarked before wrapping up the series at Sutter Health Park. “We continue to support him and hope to find a solution.”
After pitching last on April 11, Stroman was placed on the injured list due to left knee inflammation. Although he attempted to keep throwing, he was initially limited to catch sessions instead of returning to the mound.
As he tries to regain his footing, his knees keep thwarting his efforts.
Stroman’s three starts showcased a rough start with an ERA of 11.57, highlighted by two difficult outings against the Giants where he allowed five runs. Boone indicated that the knee issues are likely impacting his early-season struggles.
“In his latest start, he just didn’t seem able to perform as needed,” Boone said. “I often liken these guys to race cars—I’m somewhat distanced from it. It could influence his command and the added precision that comes with it.”
“We’ll manage him the best we can,” he added.
The Yankees could have greatly benefited from Stroman following the team’s loss of Jerit Call earlier in the season and with Lewis Gill out for several months. Carlos Carrasco also delved into his challenges and was eventually designated for assignment. Yabra is now stepping in as the fifth starter, at least for the moment.
Boone remarked that the left-hander, initially a multi-inning reliever, has been making strides since a spot start on May 3rd.
“He’s gradually extending his performances,” Boone observed before the game. “It may not be perfect just yet, but he clearly has the ability to provide us some innings.”
