Trump dismisses head of Copyright Office following removal of Librarian of Congress

The Trump administration has removed Silla Perlmutter from her position as head of the U.S. Copyright Office.

A spokesperson for the Copyright Office confirmed that an email was sent from the White House to Perlmutter on Saturday, stating, “Your position as copyright and director of the U.S. Copyright Office will soon be over.”

This decision follows President Trump’s dismissal of Carla Hayden from her role as head of the Library of Congress on Thursday, a position that oversees the Copyright Office. Hayden made history as the first woman and first African American to serve in that role.

Hayden, confirmed in 2016, appointed Perlmutter to lead the Copyright Office in October 2020. Before this role, Perlmutter was the policy director for the Associated Press and had experience in areas related to copyright and intellectual property.

Both Perlmutter and Hayden had faced scrutiny from the conservative nonprofit American Accountability Foundation (AAF).

“The president and his team have done commendable work in addressing the deep-rooted issues in the federal government. It’s time to highlight Carla Hayden and Silla Perlmutter and prioritize America’s first agenda concerning intellectual property regulations,” said AAF President Tom Jones.
