Foul ball to the groin makes Mets’ Luis Torrens consider changing his gear

Torrens Considering Gear Upgrade After Injury

Luis Torrens is thinking about changing his protective gear after leaving Sunday’s game due to a foul tip to the groin.

The Mets catcher had on a plastic cup, but after years of experiencing such impacts, he’s contemplating a more robust option.

“I’m not sure if I need to look for a different kind of cup, something like platinum or metal,” Torrens remarked following the Mets’ 6-2 win against the Cubs at Citi Field.

A foul tip from Kyle Tucker caused significant discomfort for Torrens, leading to a brief pause in the game as he was replaced by Francisco Alvarez.

“I’ve taken a lot of foul tips,” Torrens noted, referring to his groin area. “It’s pretty sensitive after all this time. I can handle being hit while pitching, but this is a different story.”

During the game, Torrens contributed with two triples that helped secure the Mets’ first run.

Meanwhile, Juan Soto, who struggled during part of the game with two strikeouts, expressed frustration but acknowledged it’s part of the sport. “Sometimes, you push too hard and it gets a bit annoying, but we just have to let it go and keep moving forward,” he said.

Soto had previously hit three homers in two games leading up to this matchup, commenting, “I feel pretty good. I think I’m in a good spot. It’s just about continuing to improve and finding my swing. I may have tried to do too much in these last couple of games.”

In other news, Ryne Stanek faced off against three batters in eight scoreless innings, following two rough saves in late April. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last five appearances, striking out five while giving up just one hit.

The Mets are now 15-4 at Citi Field, tying their best home start after 19 games, matching milestones set in 1972, 1985, and 2015.
