SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Johnny Rodriguez, a prominent figure in country music and known for his hits in the 1970s like “I Can’t Get Her Out of My Head,” “Lidin’ My Thumb to Mexico,” and “That’s the Way Love Goes,” has passed away at the age of 73.
His daughter, Aubrey Rodriguez, reported that he died on Friday in San Antonio due to health issues. She expressed on social media that he passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.
“Dad was not just a legendary musician who reached millions globally, but also a cherished husband, father, uncle, and brother. His warmth, humor, and kindness influenced the lives of all who knew him,” she shared.
In 1972, Rodriguez received the title of most promising male vocalist at the Country Music Awards Academy, and his debut album, “Introducing Johnny Rodriguez,” was up for Album of the Year in 1973.
He later reflected that his career was challenged by struggles with drug and alcohol use.
Born in Sabinal, Texas—a small town roughly 60 miles west of San Antonio and about 90 miles east of the US-Mexican border—Rodriguez experienced significant life events. In 1999, a Texas judge acquitted him of murder related to an incident where he shot someone he thought was a thief; the victim, Israel Borrego, 26, died the following day.
Despite these challenges, Rodriguez remained active in performing across South Texas and was honored with induction into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
