Apple is reportedly considering potential price hikes for its upcoming fall iPhone lineup, aiming to offset costs without directly addressing the impact of tariffs in China. The tech giant hopes to introduce new features and design enhancements to justify these higher prices.
According to individuals familiar with Apple’s strategy, the company is looking at increasing the price of the next-generation iPhone set to launch this fall. Instead of attributing the potential price rise to external factors like tariffs, Apple plans to emphasize new features and design updates, including slimmer models.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, faces pressure from the ongoing US-China trade dispute, which poses risks to the company’s supply chain. To mitigate this, he proactively built inventory prior to the announcement of tariffs in March and shifted some U.S. market manufacturing to India. Cook noted that most iPhones shipped to the U.S. from April to June were produced in India.
Nevertheless, for Apple’s premium devices like the Pro and Pro Max models, Chinese factories will continue to handle most of the production. While Indian factories could technically produce Pro models, their current infrastructure and technological capabilities aren’t advanced enough for mass production on the same scale as China. These premium models are known for their impressive camera systems and large batteries.
Meanwhile, Apple executives acknowledge that rising prices are partly due to tariffs. An April report suggested that Amazon could signal the influence of tariffs on consumer prices, which the White House denied and labeled as misleading. Given these dynamics, Apple is entertaining the idea of raising iPhone prices while exploring ways to justify these increases without relying solely on tariffs. Specific new features that could support price hikes remain under wraps.
If Apple adheres to its usual release schedule, the upcoming model will be the iPhone 17 lineup. Current iPhones range from the base iPhone 16 at $799 to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which starts at over $1,199. The fall release is expected to feature a slimmer model intended to replace the existing iPhone 16 Plus, currently priced at $899 in the U.S.
