Michael Jordan’s Return to Basketball
Michael Jordan, the legendary six-time NBA champion, is set to make a return to basketball next season. He will take on the role of “special contributor” for NBC’s coverage of the league, which is gearing up to air NBA games later this year.
This announcement came during an early NBC presentation in New York. Jordan expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m very excited to see the NBA return on NBC. The NBA at NBC is a meaningful part of my career, and I am looking forward to being a special contributor to the project. I can’t wait to see you all when the NBA starts this October.”
It’s been nearly two years since Jordan stepped away from the game, following the sale of his stake in the Charlotte Hornets for over $3 billion in August 2023. In that time, he’s focused on his racing team, 23xi, and the NASCAR Championship.
“Michael’s legacy speaks for itself, both on and off the court,” noted Rick Koldella, president of NBC Sports. “We are extremely proud to have him participate in our coverage.”
Regarded as one of the greatest basketball players ever, Jordan was undefeated in the NBA Finals, won five MVP awards, and was a 14-time All-Star, mostly with the Chicago Bulls, before finishing his playing days with the Washington Wizards.
In addition to NBC’s involvement, Comcast secured an 11-year media rights deal for the NBA last July. Other networks, including ESPN/ABC and Amazon, will also broadcast NBA games, while NBC will stream them through Peacock.
