Anthony Nunnies let out a loud cheer, slapped his gloves together, embraced catcher Christopher Soulo, and secured the victory for High A Brooklyn by closing out against Wilmington’s Murphy Staley with some particularly sharp sliders.
The 3-2 win on May 2 was packed with the usual tension you’d expect from a close game, and it made sense considering it marked the first professional save for a pitcher in the Mets minor league system.
This achievement rounded out a strong start to his first full professional season at 23, where he faced 24 batters over 14 innings, allowing just one hit for a .068 batting average against him.
However, this moment is about more than just Nunnies’ statistics; he’s become an intriguing prospect in the Mets’ organization over the past couple of years, combining powerful pitches with breaking balls. He was promoted to Double A Binghamton just this Monday.
