The Dallas Mavericks had a mere 1.8% chance of winning the NBA Draft lottery, which took place on Monday. However, they defied the odds and secured the first overall pick.
This pick awarded them the chance to select Cooper Flagg, a standout former Duke player anticipated to be a top talent even before entering college basketball ranks.
For the Mavericks, it definitely felt like luck was clearly on their side. Earlier, they made headlines by trading Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis back in February. Despite that, they did manage to reach the play-in tournament, becoming one of the eight teams vying for the NBA title.
There was a buzz around the league about how the Mavericks ended up with the top pick. Some fans were quick to hint at a “conspiracy,” and even stars like LeBron James and Kevin Love chimed in with their opinions on the matter.
Mavericks CEO Rick Weltz, who had overseen the lottery draft back in 1985 when the New York Knicks landed the first pick, commented that these suspicions had been circulating for years and felt it was essential to bring attention to the 2025 lottery process.
In the words of Weltz, “I’m in this room and the only person I’ve been in the room 40 years ago,” when Patrick Ewing was drafted. He continued, expressing his excitement about the chance to select Flagg.
The San Antonio Spurs will draft second, followed by the Philadelphia 76ers at third, and the Charlotte Hornets at fourth.
After Flagg, top prospects include Rutgers’ freshmen, Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper.
