Concerns are rising that Blackburn Rovers might pull out of the Women’s Super League 2 for the upcoming season.
Although no official decision has been announced yet, various sources indicate that the club has not fully secured the extra funding needed to meet the league’s minimum requirements for the 2025-26 season.
Simon Parker’s team ended the current season in 10th place, managing to stay clear of the bottom two by just five points, all while operating on a fairly limited budget. The league, previously known as the women’s championship, has now been rebranded as WSL 2.
This summer, the mandatory requirements for participation are set to increase, aiming to elevate the standards for clubs involved.
The criteria likely include a stipulation for the club to finalize new staff appointments within a month of the next season’s start.
Blackburn has hosted all its home games at Ewood Park this season, boasting a history of developing talent, including former England internationals like Georgia Stanway and Keira Walsh.
The league is eager to prevent a repeat of last summer when Blackburn withdrew from the second tier at the end of June due to financial challenges. It was ultimately too late in the summer to effectively prepare for a transition to alternative clubs before preseason.
Reports suggest that Blackburn has been given a deadline for next week, hoping to avoid another prolonged withdrawal. This urgency is tied to the need for a timely decision to ensure the club’s status is resolved soon.
