Kevin Durant shares his thoughts on the NBA Draft Lottery

On Monday night, Chicago hosted the NBA’s annual draft lottery. Unexpectedly, the Dallas Mavericks, entering with just a 1.8% chance, secured the first overall pick for this year’s draft.

But it wasn’t just the Mavericks drawing luck. The San Antonio Spurs and the Philadelphia 76ers also landed top three selections. The outcomes led to a noteworthy reaction from Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns.

Durant highlighted the uncertainty prevalent in this year’s NBA Draft scene. He seemed to reflect on the stress that teams face, especially those adopting tanking strategies in hopes of securing a top pick. “Tanking must really put stress on the organization,” he expressed on social media.

The Charlotte Hornets struggled once more, finishing the 2024-25 season with just 20 wins, while the Washington Wizards, who had the second overall pick last year, also did not exceed 20 wins this season.

Interestingly, despite these poor records and favorable odds for high picks, both teams found themselves outside the top three in the draft selections.

The structure of the NBA lottery has changed significantly in recent years, making it less likely for teams in rebuilding phases to secure a top three choice.

Just a few seasons ago, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Houston Rockets finished at the bottom of the standings. Fast forward to now, both are playoff contenders in the Western Conference.

The Suns are at a pivotal moment. After missing the playoffs with a 36-46 record, they parted ways with head coach Mike Budenholzer after just one season. The front office faces tough decisions regarding the future, especially concerning their star trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
