Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has expressed her support for Minnesota Lt. Colonel Peggy Flanagan (D) in the state’s Democratic Senate primary taking place on Tuesday.
In a video posted on social media, Warren praised Flanagan as a “fighter.” She remarked, “Running for office is an act of hope, and Peggy gives me hope for the future. She is the necessary partner in the Senate to make real progress on issues that matter to you.”
Flanagan seeks to replace Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.), who announced earlier this year that she would not run for reelection. Last month, Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) joined the race, receiving early backing from former Congressman Dean Phillips (D-Minn.).
Phillips tweeted, “@angiecraigmn became a great senator and gained heartfelt support. A business leader, practical progressive, and common-sense sister, she became a ranking member of the House AG Committee in just six years.”
Former state Senator Melisa Franzen (D) is also vying for the position, while state Senator Melissa Hortman (D) is seen as a potential contender.
Although the Senate seat leans Democratic, Republicans view it as a possible opportunity for a pick-up.
A handful of Republicans are in the running, including retired Navy Seal Adam Schwartze, as well as former Senate candidates Lois White and Mike Luojo.
