According to the latest report from US News, the Westline region has some of the highest obesity rates in the country. This might make you think twice about that greasy burrito.
West Virginia tops the list, with almost 41% of its adult population categorized as obese, giving it quite the significant lead over neighboring states.
Following West Virginia are Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma, Iowa, Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, where the obesity rate sits at 37.8%.
On the other hand, Colorado boasts the lowest obesity rate at 24.6%, known for its outdoor activities and craft breweries.
Right behind Colorado are Hawaii, Massachusetts, California, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Connecticut, Florida, and Montana.
Even with the lowest obesity rates, more than 20% of Colorado residents are still considered obese, suggesting that the nation is facing a growing weight problem.
Historically, before 2013, no state in the US exceeded a 35% adult obesity rate, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Clearly, times have changed.
The CDC last updated its adult obesity prevalence map in September 2024, illustrating the shift in statistics.
Obesity, defined as a body mass index of 30 or higher, increases the risk of various health issues, including sleep apnea, infertility, depression, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.
Back in 1997, the World Health Organization labeled obesity a global pandemic, indicating that rates had nearly tripled since 1975. This raises concerns about the epidemic taking root.
Yet, there’s still much debate about the reasons behind this rise, often attributed to lifestyle changes, like the growing consumption of highly processed foods and increased sedentary activities.
