The New York Yankees have put infielder Oswald Cabrera on the 10-day injured list after he suffered a significant injury during their 11-5 win against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on Monday night.
The incident happened at the top of the ninth inning. With one runner on base and Cabrera on third, Aaron Judge hit a fly ball into right field. As Cabrera tried to score, he was tagged out when the ball reached home plate.
In the process of avoiding the Mariners’ catcher, Cal Raleigh, Cabrera slid awkwardly and injured his ankle. Viewers could hear Cabrera’s pain on the broadcast.
Medical staff quickly attended to him, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone reported that Cabrera was placed on a stretcher and carried off the field. Remarkably, before leaving, Cabrera asked Judge if he had made it home safely.
Judge reflected on Cabrera’s character, highlighting his determination, saying, “It shows what kind of guy he is. Even through the pain, his first thought was, ‘Did I score?'”
It’s tough for Cabrera, who has worked hard to secure his place on the team this season. Having played primarily at third base, he was previously known as a versatile utility player. In 34 games this year, he’s batting .243, with one home run and 11 RBIs. Over his career spanning four years, his average sits at .234 with 34 home runs.
In a related move, DJ LeMahieu was activated from the injured list to take Cabrera’s spot on the roster. LeMahieu has struggled with calf and hip issues since spring training and is expected to make his season debut this week.
The Yankees, currently 24-17, are scheduled to face the Mariners again on Tuesday night at 9:40 PM.
