The Giants are set to meet with wide receiver Gabe Davis, although they may not need to fully familiarize themselves with him.
Davis will be at the team’s facility on Wednesday, reconnecting with Giants general manager Joe Shane and head coach Brian Daboll.
The trio worked together during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, which could pave the way for a more lasting collaboration, possibly alongside the Bills.
Davis, 26, was cut by the Jaguars last week. Earlier reports suggested the Giants might show interest in him.
In last month’s draft, the Giants chose not to draft any receivers. They are entering their third season after a couple of unproductive years with starters like Malik Neighbors, Onedale Robinson, and Darius Slayton returning.
In free agency, the Giants added two veterans, Lil Jordan Humphrey and Zac Pascal, and also signed several undrafted free-agent receivers.
Shane often talks about Davis as a result of strong scouting. As Buffalo’s assistant general manager, he was involved in the Bills’ decision to draft Davis from Central Florida in the fourth round of 2020, when Daboll was the team’s offensive coordinator.
Davis shone during the 2021 postseason, catching seven touchdown passes as a rookie. He had an impressive performance with eight receptions for 201 yards and four touchdown catches during the AFC divisional round, albeit in a losing effort.
However, his career has not progressed as expected since then. Last year, he signed a three-year, $39 million deal with the Jaguars, which included a $24 million guarantee, but only managed to catch 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns over ten games. He ended the 2024 season sidelined due to a torn meniscus, meaning the Giants will definitely need to assess the condition of his knees.
If signed, Davis would bring valuable experience with the Giants’ offensive scheme from his time under Daboll with the Bills.
