President Joe Biden reportedly faced challenges while prepping for last year’s contentious debate with Donald Trump. With fingers crossed, he aspires to be a “game day performer,” as suggested by insights from a new book about the Democrat’s campaign struggles.
His advisors dedicated substantial time to preparing him during a retreat at Camp David, Maryland, in June 2024.
Former White House Chief of Staff Ron Crane expressed disappointment over Biden’s readiness for the CNN debate set for June 27th. The authors, Thompson and Tupper, noted that on arrival, Biden seemed exhausted and was practically asleep on the first day, continuingly needing naps afterward.
During practice sessions, it appeared that Biden’s performances fluctuated, with critiques noting issues like poor audio clarity and an erratic delivery. One advisor mentioned that Biden often had his mouth open when not speaking and urged him to keep it closed. As the days progressed, his voice waned to the point where aides struggled to hear him, with persistent coughing becoming a concern.
Compounding these issues, the president caught a cold, leading him to decry his unfortunate performance and undergo COVID-19 tests at least twice. His sickness led the preparation team to scale back initial plans, allowing him more time to recuperate.
Even with various warning signs, Thompson and Tupper observed that Biden’s preparation appeared lacking. Campaign co-chair Jeffrey Katzenberg reportedly remarked after leaving Camp David, “Well, our guy is a match day performer.”
The fallout from the debate ignited unrest among Democrats, ultimately causing Biden to withdraw from the race—marking a significant historical moment since Lyndon Johnson in 1968.
Now, the Biden campaign has begun their debate preparations much earlier than is typical for presidential elections.
On stage, Biden’s demeanor could seem frail as he tries to manage his posture. His lackluster performance heightened anxiety among Democrats, leading to a worrying situation for a first-term president.
The book, titled “The Original Sin,” is set for release on May 20th.
