Ras Baraka likens himself to King David in address to supporters after his arrest.

Newark Mayor Highlights His Arrest in Political Rally

Newark’s Mayor Ras Baraka characterized his recent arrest at the Federal Immigration Center as “our David’s moment” during a political rally on Tuesday. This remark came shortly after he participated in a major debate for the upcoming gubernatorial election in New Jersey.

Baraka praised his approach as “absolutely effective,” maintaining that he had acted appropriately. At the rally, he likened his situation to the biblical story of King David, stating, “This is our David moment.” He urged his supporters not to shy away from challenges, emphasizing that true promises are often guarded by adversity, saying, “If you are running from conflict and controversy, you will never get what is promised to you.”

During his speech, Baraka recounted the moments leading up to his arrest at the immigration facility, stating that he felt paralyzed upon learning of the impending arrest for trespassing. “The counselor came to the gate and said, ‘Mayor, they are going to arrest you.’ It was a Davidic moment,” he recalled, adding that he could have avoided the situation but felt unable to move.

His arrest took place amid a protest at Delaney Hall, where he and some council members were said to be fulfilling their legislative duties regarding federal detention facilities. According to a Department of Homeland Security official, Baraka and the congress members were at the site alongside a group of demonstrators who sought entry to the facility.

On Tuesday, Baraka expressed frustration about the conditions at the detention center, sharing that he was required to provide extensive personal information, including details about his family, before facing court on Thursday. “I mean, I’m revealing it, but it’s real. I have to go to court on Thursday. Are these people… serious?” he remarked, indicating his intent to plead not guilty.

Baraka confirmed he returned to the detention center the morning after the rally and participated in a pretrial intervention call prior to the upcoming court hearing.
