Luana Alonso Makes a Splashy Comeback
Paraguayan Olympian Luana Alonso is making waves again after a tumultuous stint at last year’s Paralympics. She’s returning to swimming following her retirement, which she announced after facing some fallout from her time in the Olympic village.
Alonso, who represented her country in both the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paralympics, hinted at a comeback in an Instagram story. “Next year I’ll be back,” she shared when fans inquired about her future in the sport. “But I’m not sure if I’ll jump back into competitive swimming.”
Notably, Alonso gained attention for a five-ring tattoo during the Olympics but struggled to advance in her final two events. Following her performance in the women’s 100m butterfly, where she didn’t make it past the heats, Alonso announced her retirement from competitive swimming and, somewhat unexpectedly, launched an OnlyFans page.
“Official!” she declared on social media. “I’m retiring from swimming, thank you all for your support! Sorry Paraguay, I just want to express my gratitude!”
Reportedly, she continued to stay in the Olympic village after her retirement, but her actions were controversial, which raised eyebrows among the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, leading to her being ousted from the village.
“Her presence has created an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay,” remarked Larissa Scheerer, a director of the committee. “We appreciate her compliance with our requests and her decision not to stay overnight.”
Further scrutiny came when local media claimed that instead of supporting her teammates, Alonso spent her time at Disneyland. In a livestream prior to the games, she also mentioned wanting to represent the United States more than Paraguay.
Alonso’s style was deemed distracting by some, with reports suggesting her flashy clothing and relationships with other competitors drew attention. She has denied being kicked out of the Olympic village, asserting on Instagram, “I just want to clarify that I was never removed or exiled from anywhere.” She added that she doesn’t wish to make a big deal about it, but it won’t impact her going forward either.
Looking ahead, Alonso plans to resume her swimming career after graduating from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Although she was eligible to swim for one season, she opted out of returning to the team for 2023-2024. Recently, she shared another Instagram story with the caption, “Heading into the first semester.”
