Dear Abby: I’m really at my wit’s end with a relative who seems to lie constantly. She’s concocting stories—like claiming she was in high school with a certain celebrity, despite the fact that this celebrity is 15 years older than her, according to Google. It feels like she’s always trying to prove me wrong. I’m fed up with it and would prefer to cut off communication. What drives someone to act this way? Why does she crave so much attention? – True or false in Illinois
Dear True or False: It sounds like you’re taking this quite personally. Often, people who embellish in this way do so out of insecurity. They might not feel great about themselves, leading them to exaggerate their experiences to appear more significant or accomplished than they really are. It’s kind of sad, really, rather than something to be completely frustrated with. Whenever possible, try to overlook her tall tales.
Dear Abby: A while back, I bought one of your recipe booklets that had a fantastic Gazpacho recipe (it doesn’t include any oils). Unfortunately, I don’t have that booklet anymore. Could you share the Gazpacho recipe? And is the booklet still available? There were other recipes I really liked, too. Thank you! – Boston Brenda B.
Dear Brenda: I’m happy to share the Gazpacho recipe with you! It’s a light and refreshing dish, perfect for spring and summer meals. It’s part of the first set of my cookbooklets.
Yield: 8 servings (1/2 cup each)
Ingredients
- 3 cups finely chopped tomatoes
- 1 1/2 cups finely chopped peeled cucumber
- 1/2 cup finely chopped green pepper
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- Salt, pepper, garlic, garlic salt, or garlic juice to taste
- Optional: Spike seasonings
Method
In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well. If you want a spicier gazpacho, feel free to add seasoning as needed. Chill for 1-2 days to let the flavors meld, and serve garnished with thin lemon slices.
Tip: Use a food processor to chop the vegetables quickly and easily.
