TikTok users in the U.S. puzzled by the name of an Australian town, Tiddy Widdy Beach

Recently, Americans have expressed skepticism about whether Australia is a “real place,” particularly after encountering peculiar names of small towns in South Australia.

A highlight came from US content creator “Babid Dwee,” who shared his discovery of Tiddy Widdy Beach, a tiny coastal town north of Adelaide, known for its beach homes and a tight-knit population of just 195 residents.

The town’s quirky name originates from a well nearby, historically referred to by local Indigenous people as “Tiddy Widdy ned,” according to the South Australia Tourism website.

In videos that racked up over 2 million views, the US creator explored the area via Google Maps, chuckling at the oddity of having a bed and breakfast called Schmidty at Tiddy Widdy, right off Tiddy Widdy Road.

He humorously noted a review for Schmidty that read, “I feel bad, I did a bit of a time, I was shmiddy and resourceful.”

Australians quickly chimed in with comments showcasing other amusing town names and attractions. One mentioned a cave in South Australia ominously called “we weren’t there last year,” while another pointed out a suburb named Humpybong. A third person brought up “the disappointment of Victoria’s Mount,” while a fourth remarked jokingly about a swimming pool named after a prime minister who famously vanished at the beach.

The American creator reacted with disbelief, expressing that all this seemed like proof that Australia might not be real. “This sounds like a Dr. Seuss novel,” he quipped.

Adding to the playful banter, he noted that everything in Australia seems either whimsical or frightening, with nothing in between. “Australia is like a fanatic dream,” remarked another viewer.

In a darker twist, last year, a 62-year-old man was stabbed multiple times while trying to stop a burglary at a home in Tiddy Widdy Beach. Remarkably, his attacker was later rescued by community members after the assailant’s vehicle crashed and exploded.

Moreover, the town was rocked by a tragic incident in 2017 involving an alleged murder-suicide that claimed the lives of a seven-year-old boy and his 42-year-old mother.
