Deported 2-year-old's family dropping lawsuit against Trump administration

The attorney representing a two-year-old child, who was deported to Honduras with her mother, announced plans to cease lawsuits against the Trump administration on Tuesday.

Federal judges had previously issued warnings regarding child deportation, highlighting a lack of “meaningful process.”

“Considering the trauma families have endured, they are pausing to fully explore their options, focusing on their children’s safety and well-being,” a spokesperson stated.

The family is represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Immigration Project, and other organizations. They indicated a desire for “space and time to evaluate all available options.”

The child’s father had expressed a wish for her to remain in the United States, where she is a citizen, according to her attorney.

A lawyer from the Trump administration contended that the mother intended for her child to accompany her along with her other siblings. The government supported its claim with documented memos, which were noted to be in Spanish, but a federal judge stated that their authenticity needs to be confirmed.

“The government claims this is acceptable because the mother wishes for her child to be deported with her, but the courts lack this confirmation,” remarked the U.S. district judge in the official application.

For the time being, both mother and child are in Central America and have been released by federal immigration authorities. The scheduled hearing later this week might have been overlooked, and the judge would have sought further clarification regarding the legality of child deportation.
