Draymond Green penalized $50,000 for criticizing the honesty of referees

Draymond Green has once again found himself in hot water in the NBA. The Golden State Warriors forward was fined $50,000 for making “inappropriate comments” directed at officials during Game 3 of their playoff series against Minnesota.

The league stated that Green questioned the “integrity of the game” during the Warriors’ 102-97 loss to the Timberwolves. It seems he was implying that the referees had a hand in the outcome of the game.

In the midst of the game, he reportedly expressed frustration about the point spread, saying something along the lines of, “5 and a half years old. I know what they’re doing,” referring to the game’s dynamics.

Green has accumulated a fair number of technical fouls this postseason, which puts him at risk. If he reaches seven, he faces a one-game suspension. His history includes a suspension during Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals, and more recently, he faced repercussions for an incident where he stomped on the chest of Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis.

According to Spotrac, Green has racked up nearly $1 million in fines throughout his career, with a considerable chunk due to his actions on the court. Additionally, he has lost $3.2 million because of suspensions.

Last season was particularly challenging for him, as he was suspended indefinitely for his on-court behavior, which included a chokehold on Rudy Gobert and an open-handed slap of Jusuf Nurkić.

Recently, Green has discussed the perception of him as an “angry black man,” acknowledging past moments he found embarrassing, particularly one during Game 7 of the first playoff round. He mentioned his need for support from those he trusts as he navigates these experiences.

Coach Steve Kerr has noted Green’s intensity and competitiveness can sometimes lead him to cross lines, adding that it’s crucial for the team to help him maintain his composure. They recognize how much competition means to him.

As the Warriors continue their playoff run, they will head into Game 5 against Minnesota, missing Stephen Curry due to injury.
