Jaishankar Discusses India-US Trade Agreement

New Delhi:

Negotiations are ongoing regarding a trade agreement between India and the United States. Foreign Minister Jaishankar stated that these discussions are crucial, emphasizing that such agreements must be beneficial for both nations. He noted that the potential deal might boost bilateral trade to over $500 billion by 2030, encompassing a variety of goods.

Jaishankar elaborated that while trade contracts are important, they need to be mutually advantageous. He addressed President Trump’s earlier comments about a “no tariffs” proposal during a recent event. Trump mentioned difficulties in selling products in India due to customs duties.

Despite Trump’s tariffs aimed at numerous countries, including a significant rate imposed on India, Jaishankar pointed out that the situation remains complex. The Indian government reacted by lowering tariffs on selective U.S. items but avoided imposing retaliatory tariffs out of a desire to strengthen ties with Washington.

Both countries are committed to enhancing trade relations. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is set to lead a delegation to the U.S. from May 17 to 20, hoping to advance discussions.

About the Trade Agreement

The talks have gained momentum recently, with U.S. Vice President JD Vance visiting India and confirming that discussions were progressing. The U.S. is expected to grant India “most favored nation” status under the terms of the agreement, which is anticipated to cover 24 categories of goods.

India seeks beneficial tariffs for its labor-intensive sectors like textiles and jewelry in return.

Broader Context of Trade

Amidst these discussions, India has also announced a free trade agreement with the UK, aimed at easing trade barriers across various sectors. Furthermore, a $100 billion contract has been signed with the European Free Trade Association, which includes non-EU countries like Norway and Switzerland, showing India’s growing trade partnerships.
