Rafael Furcal, a former MLB All-Star and World Series champion, was arrested in Florida on Wednesday, facing several serious charges. Furcal, now 47, is being charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and using a deadly missile against a residence.
An arrest affidavit indicated that at one point, Furcal’s vehicle and that of the victim nearly collided, coming alarming close. According to the victim, Furcal began to gather rocks from the ground and threw them during the confrontation. At one point, Furcal allegedly picked up a small palm-sized rock and threw it after the victim exited his vehicle, resulting in a laceration as the victim attempted to shield himself.
In a tense moment, the victim punched Furcal, who fled the scene. It’s important to note that the victim expressed fear for his life regarding the incident.
During his baseball career, Furcal played in the majors for 14 years. He made his debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2000, earning the National League Rookie of the Year Award that same year. His performance was impressive, boasting a .295 batting average with 134 hits and 87 runs. Furcal’s career also included time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals, where he became part of the Cardinals’ World Series-winning team in 2011, which was a notable highlight in his career. He also earned an All-Star selection while with the Cardinals in 2012.
Furcal played his last MLB season with the Miami Marlins in 2014, concluding a substantial career in professional baseball where he finished with a .281 batting average, 587 RBIs, and participated in 1,614 games.
