Political analyst Mark Halperin has called out CNN’s chief media analyst, Brian Stelter, for what he describes as “journalist corruption.” This accusation comes after Stelter defended author Jake Tupper in his newsletters, asserting Tupper’s integrity against conservative critiques related to a supposed cover-up. Halperin argued that Stelter has not fulfilled his duty as a media reporter to hold the media accountable.
Halperin emphasized that Stelter, who is more aligned with Tupper, seems more focused on safeguarding Tupper’s reputation than addressing significant failures in American media. He noted that instead of investigating these issues, Stelter is praising Tupper’s books. “Today, Stelter wrote about the importance of truth in Tupper’s works, but I don’t think it’s a media reporter’s role to protect and promote their colleagues,” he stated.
Halperin also critiqued Stelter’s handling of concerns regarding President Biden’s apparent decline. He pointed out that, in addition to defending Tupper, Stelter has criticized right-wing commentators during Biden’s presidency, which Halperin believes detracts from the responsibility media has to provide a balanced perspective. “Instead of highlighting the flaws in the book, he opts to share positive reviews from major publications,” Halperin remarked, referring to Stelter’s approach as nothing short of corruption in journalism.
The discussion included a reference to Stelter’s newsletter section on the book’s fact-checking process, with the book’s Twitter account sharing links to Stelter’s favorable comments. Halperin, in his show, challenged the notion that Tupper was among those who previously scrutinized Biden’s cognitive state before a notable debate. As of now, Stelter has not responded to requests for comment.
