Chris Brown Set for Court Appearance Following Assault Charge in London
LONDON – American R&B artist Chris Brown is slated to appear in a UK courtroom on Friday after being arrested and charged with assault at a nightclub in London earlier this year.
Brown, who is 36, is widely recognized for his mid-2000s hits, such as “Kiss, Kiss,” and has a history marked by legal trouble, including a felony conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna back in 2009.
According to the Metropolitan Police, he was taken into custody early Thursday at a hotel in Manchester.
Facing multiple criminal charges, including sexual assault and domestic violence, he’s expected to appear in Northwestern courthouse at 10 a.m. (0900 GMT) on Friday, as reported by Capital Police.
The charges stem from an incident described as “serious physical harm with intent,” reportedly occurring at a venue on Hanover Square in London on February 19, 2023.
It’s alleged that Brown assaulted music producer Abediaw with a bottle at a nightclub in the upscale Mayfair area of London.
The singer, who first entered the music scene in the early 2000s and has sold millions of records worldwide, was in the UK for a tour during the time of the incident.
Reports indicate he arrived at Manchester Airport on a private jet on Wednesday afternoon.
Upcoming engagements include a world tour set to kick off next month, which features several UK dates in June and July.
Media sources noted that police arrested Brown early Thursday at the luxury Raleigh hotel in Manchester.
The History of Violence
The two-time Grammy winner achieved fame for his smooth R&B vocals and later incorporated rap into his style, yet his reputation has faced serious challenges due to various allegations of domestic violence and other abuses.
He infamously assaulted Rihanna just before the 2009 Grammy Awards, an incident that prevented her from attending the prestigious event.
In 2012, he was involved in a confrontation with a member of Drake’s entourage at a New York nightclub, resulting in an injury to basketball player Tony Parker from shattered glass.
Two years later, he pleaded guilty to hitting a fan in Washington.
After a rapid rise from his beginnings in a local Virginia church choir, Brown was arrested in 2016 when a woman allegedly pointed a gun at him.
Earlier that same year, he faced allegations of battery in Las Vegas.
He has also been accused of raping a woman in a hotel in Paris but denied the claims, ultimately not facing charges.
