Former FBI director James Comey stirred up controversy with a recent Instagram post that many interpreted as an anti-Trump statement. In the post, he displayed a shell painted blue with the words “voting Harris” and a reference to the Disney character Ariel. This message, which also included the numbers “86 47,” has raised suspicions among some White House officials who suggested it might incite violence against the former president.
After sharing the image, Comey faced scrutiny, prompting the Secret Service to initiate an investigation into the post. Tarsi Gabbard cautioned against underestimating the potential threats tied to Comey’s online activity.
In a follow-up, Comey acknowledged the backlash. He explained that he had simply been sharing photos of shells from a beach walk, unaware that his message could be linked to violence. He emphasized his opposition to any kind of aggression.
While Comey’s political opinions are well-known, especially after his dismissal during Trump’s presidency, the FBI did not formally comment on this issue. Nevertheless, it appears that agents were aware of his recent social media activity. Kash Patel, the current FBI director, confirmed this awareness and mentioned ongoing communication regarding the situation.
Trump responded to the controversy, indicating that Comey certainly understood the implications behind his post. Some critics, including Ted Cruz, argued that Comey’s animosity toward Trump fuels a larger narrative of violent rhetoric from the left. Republican Andy Ogres added that there’s a noticeable double standard in how similar posts are treated based on political affiliation.
Comey has a history of posting politically charged content. His recent posts have included themes and messages directed at Republicans and Trump, reflecting his ongoing engagement in political discourse.
