Leaked Audio Reveals Biden’s Thoughts on Classified Documents
Former President Joe Biden, in a recently leaked audio from an interview with special advisor Robert Huar, mentioned that he probably still possesses classified documents concerning Afghanistan. He remarked that he kept these documents “for future generations” after his time as vice president.
Initially, Biden expressed uncertainty about why he had these documents, recalling Huar mentioning their presence in a library at his lake house. “I don’t know what I knew,” Biden said, “but it’s not something I would have just ignored.” Huar noted that both Bob Woodward and Jules Witcover had referenced this in a book about Biden and inquired if he wished to maintain that narrative since it might become part of historical discourse.
Biden stated, “I think I wanted to keep it for future generations. This was my perspective on Afghanistan. From a historical viewpoint, certain moments in world history are significant.” He elaborated a bit more but then seemed to drift off topic. Huar tried to steer the conversation back, prompting Biden to clarify, “No, sorry, that’s why I wanted it. There was nothing in Afghanistan.” One of Biden’s lawyers intervened, requesting Huar to avoid speculative discussions for clarity’s sake.
This led to Huar suggesting a break. Throughout other parts of the audio, Biden seemed somewhat disoriented, expressing confusion about the year his late son, Beau Biden, passed away, as well as the year he left the vice presidency.
The audio has come to light as part of an investigation into Biden’s handling of classified information. This followed over a year of demands from lawmakers for its release, raising questions about Biden’s memory and cognitive function. In July, the House Judiciary Committee filed a lawsuit against Attorney General Merrick Garland regarding the audio, emphasizing the significance of context in Biden’s responses.
The committee asserts that both transcripts and audio recordings serve as the most accurate reflection of how Biden articulated himself during the interview. This lawsuit was initiated prior to Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, which came after a challenging encounter with Trump in June.
Biden had previously asserted privilege over the audio recordings during his presidency. Following a lengthy investigation, Huar, who shared a report with the public in February 2024, indicated he would not propose criminal charges against Biden for what he termed false documentaries or any mismanagement of classified materials, even if Biden were outside the Oval Office.
These classified records reportedly included material on military and foreign policy matters regarding Afghanistan, among other national security insights, as indicated by Huar. Biden has been approached for comments regarding these developments.
