Inmates Escape from New Orleans Jail
On Friday, ten violent offenders managed to escape from the Orleans Judicial Center in New Orleans, which raised significant concerns about security measures. Reports indicate that the inmates accessed a small window concealed behind a toilet, allowing them to reach the maintenance area. From there, they broke through a wall and fled the facility.
Witnesses noted seeing a group of individuals in orange jumpsuits running along Interstate 10 in the early morning hours. This was definitely a brazen move. Adding insult to injury, the escaping inmates tagged the walls with graffiti, leaving messages like “Too easy ha ha,” “Catch us if you can,” and “My Most Favorite 9” at the scene.
Sheriff Hatson has initiated an internal investigation, suspecting possible help from within the facility since the plumbing panels and toilets could only be removed from the outside. As a result, three employees have been suspended pending the investigation.
Moreover, Sheriff Hatson pointed out that ongoing renovations had left certain areas inadequately secure. It seems that defective doors and locks contributed to the situation, while the staffing was reported to be at only 60%. Interestingly, one of the two officers monitoring the area was absent, and the other had stepped out to get food.
“We acknowledge that security has lapsed,” the sheriff’s office commented, noting that roughly a third of the facility’s security cameras were nonfunctional at the time of the escape.
