Lancashire versus Derbyshire, Somerset versus Sussex and more: county cricket – live coverage

Saturday Summary

Good morning! It’s another bright day at Old Trafford, and we’re witnessing Jimmy Anderson’s return. While Northants and Sussex are struggling, there are some fascinating matches unfolding elsewhere starting at 11 am, so feel free to join in.

After a few eventful days, Lancashire managed to surpass 450 runs against Derbyshire at Old Trafford. Interestingly, the crowd wasn’t just there for the runs—James Anderson, batting at number 11, received a standing ovation. It had been 309 days since his last Test and 318 days since he last played for Lancashire at Southport.

Fans were allowed on the field between innings, watching closely as Lancashire warmed up. They couldn’t help but snap pictures of Anderson as he practiced. He still looked fit, with his signature white wristbands and sharp haircut. When he took the ball at the familiar end, the applause was thunderous. Though he might not have been perfect right away, it only took him 18 balls to bowl Caleb Jewell out, hitting the top of the stumps with a peach of a delivery.

Not long after, he took another wicket, dismissing David Lloyd, who struggled against a series of bouncers. Anderson ended his spell with figures of two for 24 over five overs, leaving Derbyshire at four down when stumps were called.

George Bell, age 22, who contributed a solid 57 runs, remarked, “That was class. I always enjoy it when he bowls, especially from the slips—something I never expected to experience.”

In Chester-le-Street, James Minto, a 17-year-old nightwatchman, became the youngest Durham player to score over 50 runs, helping to chase Nottinghamshire with a solid 67. The partnership between Adam Lyth and Emilio Gay also kept Durham within striking distance.

Sussex, on the other hand, was forced to follow on after Craig Overton took three wickets and made an impact with slip catches. Despite a strong start by Daniel Hughes and Tom Haines in their second innings, they lost four wickets for just 21 runs shortly afterward.

Peter Hanscomb, playing against his old team Middlesex, contributed 89 for Leicestershire, putting them in a tight spot at Lord’s, with Zafar Gohar taking four wickets for Middlesex.

Glamorgan’s batsmen were on fire at Sophia Gardens, with several half-centuries, before they bowled Northants out for just 49 in their second innings, leaving them 190 runs behind. Cameron Green managed to save Gloucestershire with an unbeaten 102 against Kent.

Surrey found themselves in a good position against Yorkshire, thanks to contributions from Ben Foakes and Kurtis Patterson. Meanwhile, Warwickshire had a rough time against Kyle Abbott, as Hampshire extended their lead to a comfortable 265 runs.

Essex faced a tough day at New Road, crumbling for just 157 runs, with Tom Taylor shining as the best bowler. Worcestershire had their own hiccups, sliding to 58 for five before stumps but still holding a significant lead of 259 runs.
