Lucy Hale shares valuable tips for mental well-being after feeling ‘misunderstood’

Lucy Hale, the 35-year-old actress, is openly discussing the importance of mental health management amid her bustling Hollywood career.

In an exclusive conversation with the Post, she shared her belief that no one should face their struggles alone. She highlighted her “Secret Weapon”: a self-help book titled *The Prism* by Laura Day, a well-regarded author.

According to Hale, the concept of the “prism” suggests that we all have the power to be our own miracle makers, and there’s immense strength in connection with others.

The star, known for *Pretty Little Liars*, revealed feeling often “misunderstood and isolated,” as if no one could truly grasp her experiences.

Day’s book is characterized as a practical resource aimed at helping readers identify and break free from self-sabotaging patterns.

With support, Hale has come to understand that she isn’t the issue herself.

She emphasized that if anyone feels alone or unsupported, it might be time to reconsider their surroundings or relationships. One memorable takeaway from the book for her is the idea that loving imperfectly is perfectly okay.

Hale has been maintaining sobriety for three years and is actively searching for her community. Day’s writings have played a key role in her healing journey.

“True recovery for me has been about taking ownership of my life while also realizing it’s about more than just myself,” Hale noted. She described her journey as a conscious and daily choice.

The actress shared that even though she toils behind the scenes, there’s still much to protect about her personal narrative. However, she looks forward to what’s to come in the next year.

Day spoke fondly of Hale, describing her as “generous and lovely” in their collaborations.

Reflecting on her past, Hale opened up about the onset of her alcohol addiction during her teens.

On January 2, 2022, she resolved to stay sober, realizing that continuing down that path could cost her everything she cherished.

Initially uncertain about sharing her experiences publicly, she eventually saw it as a way to connect and help others facing similar challenges.

She acknowledged that her intentions in opening up were not to become a poster child for sobriety but rather to heal and regain her strength.

In March 2025, Hale was recognized with the Humanitarian Award from a recovery center dedicated to women with addiction issues, an honor that speaks to her journey.

She believes that her work has provided crucial support during tough times, serving as a guiding force in her life. “My love for acting has always been my North Star—it gives me direction and purpose,” she concluded.
