Verstappen Takes Charge at Emilia Romagna GP
If you believe Oscar Piastri is going to dominate the 2025 Formula 1 Driver Championship, Max Verstappen seems keen to challenge that notion.
Or maybe he’s just willing to discuss it.
During the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Verstappen passed Piastri in the opening lap after the McLaren driver had an impressive start. Piastri managed to lead into the first corner, but Verstappen maneuvered around him at the Tamburello Chicane, taking the lead quickly.
The competitive nature of the race intensified as Red Bull drivers dealt with a safety car situation. Kimi Antonelli experienced a power failure on lap 46 after Esteban Ocon exited onto the grass on lap 29.
Verstappen executed the safety car restart perfectly, moving ahead with Lando Norris, who overtook Piastri to secure victory for the fourth consecutive time at Imola during Red Bull’s 400th Grand Prix. Piastri put up a solid performance to fend off Lewis Hamilton, who made a notable recovery from 12th to finish in 4th place.
This win brought Verstappen within 22 points of Piastri in the driver standings, while Norris’ second place cut his deficit to Piastri to just 13 points.
Carlos Sainz Jr. finished in 8th place, and Alexander Albon had a strong day for Williams, coming in 5th. Charles Leclerc secured 6th ahead of George Russell in 7th. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda, former teammates now racing with Red Bull, also made noteworthy appearances.
Tsunoda managed an impressive recovery, making his way to points after a significant crash during qualifying on Saturday forced him to start from the pit lane.
