Jennifer Lawrence Discusses Postpartum Struggles
Jennifer Lawrence has candidly shared her challenges with postpartum issues. During a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival for her film “Die, My Love,” she reflected on her character, Grace, who faces similar struggles as a new mother dealing with postpartum depression and psychosis.
“As a mother, it was hard for me to differentiate between what I experience and what she goes through, and that was truly heartbreaking,” Lawrence remarked, noting the emotional weight of portraying Grace while navigating motherhood herself with her son, Sai, whose name remains undisclosed. She filmed this project alongside her husband, Cooke Maroney.
Lawrence, 34, described the postpartum experience as “very isolated,” humorously acknowledging the uniqueness of it. She articulated a sense of loss for not having a support network when her character and her partner, played by Robert Pattinson, are relocated to Montana.
“The reality is that extreme anxiety and depression can feel incredibly isolating, no matter where you are. It’s like being in a world where you feel like an alien,” she added, conveying the heavy weight of loneliness that often accompanies such feelings.
While filming “Die, My Love” during her second pregnancy, she reflected on how motherhood profoundly alters one’s life. “It changes everything. It’s both brutal and beautiful. I had no idea I could feel this deeply,” she expressed, emphasizing the transformative nature of her new role as a mother.
Lawrence became a mother for the first time in February 2022 with the birth of her son. In early 2025, she and Maroney welcomed their second child, whose gender and name are yet to be shared. The couple tends to keep their children away from the public eye.
