NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Race Ends in Controversy
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at North Wilkesboro Speedway was marked by a dramatic conclusion as Corey Heim spun out while battling Layne Riggs during the final lap.
Both drivers put in a solid effort throughout the race. Heim was ahead, but as he crossed the white flag, things took a turn. He opted for the high lane, while Riggs went low, leading to a bit of chaos. Off the backstretch, Heim lost control of his truck with Riggs right alongside him.
In those last two turns, Heim lost his position, and Chandler Smith managed to get around Riggs, ultimately claiming victory. Riggs secured second place.
After the race, Heim had some choice words for Riggs. He warned him to “calm down or otherwise I’ll take care of you.” It was clear that Heim was frustrated with Riggs’ driving tactics and expressed his displeasure after they returned to Pit Road. He labeled Riggs’ maneuver in the final lap as “Scum Racing.”
Heim commented, “Why would he do that? He pulled the same stunt last week trying to win against the 7 (Carson Joséval) and got away with it.” He seemed upset, feeling that despite dominating much of the race, they ended with nothing. “Smith drove a good race, though,” he added, somewhat resigned.
On the other hand, Riggs defended his actions, calling it a “strong move.” He reflected, “If I’m known for going for the win, I have no regrets. This race felt like it was always going to end in a tight finish, reminiscent of past races at Martinsville.” Yet, even with his spirit, he lamented not being able to claim victory.
Heim concluded the race in 17th place, but despite this setback, he still leads the driver’s standings with 450 points, a solid 47 points ahead of Smith. Riggs climbed to eighth in the rankings.
