New Oklahoma Law on Firearm Defensive Displays
Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a new law on Thursday that allows Oklahomans to use “defensive displays” of firearms to protect their property. This legislation, known as HB 2818, took effect immediately upon signing.
This law has garnered significant attention. Under its provisions, “defensive displays” can include:
- Notifying someone verbally that you own a firearm, such as saying, “I have a gun.”
- Showing or exhibiting a weapon in a manner that indicates to a reasonable person that it is meant to deter illegal actions.
- Resting your hand on a firearm whether it’s in a pocket, holster, case, or other forms of transport.
Back in February 2019, it was reported that Oklahoma became the 15th state to adopt constitutional carry laws. Following the signing of this new bill, Gov. Stitt mentioned, “When I traveled throughout the state to all 77 counties, I heard from Oklahomans that they wanted us to protect our right to bear arms.”
