Zinke on GOP Spending Plans and Social Programs
Representative Ryan Zinke from Montana remarked on Sunday that Republicans are not overly worried about potential threats to social programs amid their ongoing support for President Trump’s agenda.
“Those who rightfully deserve profits will benefit,” Zinke stated in an interview on News Nation’s “The Hill Sunday.” He added that there needs to be stricter controls for those relying on government assistance.
Zinke justified the Republicans’ push for Medicaid work requirements, suggesting it could save money in a program that serves about 80 million individuals nationwide. He argued for states to take on more responsibility regarding federal initiatives like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to help mitigate waste.
“You can’t just give out free money; it removes the incentive to save,” he explained. “Sure, everything seems fine while the music plays. But what do we really know about the future? It’s our children we’re talking about.”
Having previously served as Secretary of the Interior during Trump’s first term, Zinke emphasized the necessity for Congressional leaders to “have the courage to identify savings” to address the country’s debt. He also mentioned that lawmakers should make the 2017 tax cuts more permanent, which he believes would be beneficial for Americans.
“Any savings should carry over, and most agree on maintaining tax policies to avoid the largest tax increase in U.S. history,” he noted. “It’s all about balance, and we must be cautious about accumulating more debt.”
Zinke pointed out that Moody’s has recently downgraded the U.S. credit rating as a way to manage this debt issue.
“The bond market tells the truth,” he remarked.
